How do I get through the first evening after a slip?

Be gentle with yourself first. The evening after a slip can feel heavier than the slip itself. Here is a small, practical plan for tonight. For the kinder, slower version, see After a slip: three things for tonight in Struggles & Support.

Make tonight smaller

•
Eat something real, and drink a glass of water.
•
Put your phone to bed early, outside the bedroom if you can.
•
Step outside, even for five minutes.
•
Send one ordinary message to someone you trust. It does not have to be about the slip.

Have one tool ready

If an urge comes back tonight, open the app, tap I feel an urge, and choose the option that feels easiest. Even two minutes can help an urge pass.
If you message someone tonight, it can be as plain as: rough day, could use a normal chat. You do not owe anyone the details.

Tomorrow morning, one step

Do the check-in. Read one of your reasons. Then ask one question, kindly: what did this slip teach me about my trail? An hour, a place, a feeling. Tomorrow it can become an if-then plan.

If tonight is more than a hard evening

If thoughts of harming yourself show up, please reach out now: the crisis line in the app (I feel an urge, then Reach out), your local emergency number, or findahelpline.com to find a line near you.

In for 4, hold for 4, out for 6. Stay with it while the urge softens.
